Common questions about acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine...

What does acupuncture feel like? Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are very fine, not much thicker than a human hair. You may feel a tingling, dull ache, throbbing or electric sensation when the acupuncture needle is inserted. This feeling is called 'de qi' and signifies movement of Qi in the meridians. This is a good sign that your treatment is working! Needles used for acupuncture are much smaller and thinner than the standard hypodermic needle, therefore you will not feel the same sharp pain
as you do when getting an injection. Most people describe acupuncture as an extremely relaxing and calming feeling.

Is acupuncture safe?

We use only sterile single use, disposable acupuncture needles. Anna is fully qualified, and has undergone 5 years of acupuncture training at RMIT University.

What will a treatment involve?

You should allow up to 70 minutes for your first visit, and up to 50 minutes for follow-up visits. A typical consultation involves a detailed diagnosis, which includes questioning, observation of your physical state and tongue and pulse diagnosis. You will then be asked to lie down on our comfy treatment table while acupuncture needles are inserted. These are left in place for 15-20 minutes, allowing your Qi to flow, and enabling you to sink into a state of relaxation. Depending on your condition, cupping may also be given.

How long will I need treatment for?

This depends on the severity and chronicity of your condition, as well as your age, general health and constitution. Chronic conditions usually require a longer course of treatment than acute illnesses. We usually advise patients to return once per week for 4-6 weeks. Anna will discuss your treatment plan with you on your first visit.

Can I continue with treatment even if I'm not sick anymore?

Definitely! Once your illness has resolved, you can maintain and enhance your health and prevent reoccurrence by having regular maintenance visits.  Prevention is key in Chinese Medicine. With regular treatment, your practitioner can resolve minor imbalances and prevent serious illness.

Can I claim private health insurance rebates for acupuncture and herbal medicine?

Most private health insurers now provide cover for Chinese Medicine. However, this depends on the level of coverage you have. Check with your insurer for further information.
